Eating good food is considered one of life’s simple pleasures. When you get home from a tiring day at work, the first thing you want to do is eat a good meal and rest.
No one knows exactly when pizza was invented, but experts say that its origin dates back to 7,000 years ago. People would eat flatbread and put toppings on them to make it more flavourful and delicious. There are even accounts of ancient Greek soldiers preparing flatbread with toppings to strengthen themselves before the battle.
Pizza is known for its iconic round shape and irreplaceable marinara sauce. It was in the 18th century when tomatoes were first included in the flatbread dish, and was called pizza for the first time. Europeans generally believed that tomatoes were poisonous, which is why they stayed away from it. However, the poor would eat it frequently with their baked bread.
Since pizza was first considered a poor person’s dish, high-class citizens didn’t eat it. It was only when pizza became a local delicacy in Naples that the rich people began to eat and cook it with tomatoes. Soon, people from all over Italy would visit the city to try the delicious flatbread for themselves.
In 1807, there were 54 pizzerias built in Naples. This number increased to 120 by the 19th century. People loved eating pizza and especially ordered the one topped with tomato sauce, mozzarella, and fresh basil. This was called a Pizza Margherita, which is said to be named after the Queen Margherita of Savoy.
The pizza dish became so popular that in the early 20th century, it started to spread in other parts of the world, particularly in Canada and the United States. These countries took the traditional pizza recipe and made their own. Soon, fast-food restaurants that specialized in pizza dishes were born.
Today, pizza is one of the most popular dishes in the world. Many pizza chains emerged in different countries, giving people the chance to taste Italian food without going to Naples. No matter where you are, you can easily find an Italian restaurant in your area!

With pizza being one of the most popular foods in the world, it comes as no surprise that it has achieved great feats and captured the hearts of millions across the globe. - The world’s largest pizza was made in Rome.
Have you ever dreamt about all the pizza you could ever eat? This is now possible because of a Guinness World Record completed by chefs in Rome. Dovilio Nardi, Andrea Manocchio, Marco Nardi, Matteo Nardi, and Matteo Giannote made a pizza that is 13,580 feet long! The pizza was named Ottavia and she was 100% gluten-free. - The first pizzeria in North Korea opened in 2009.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il was a big fan of pizza. He loved it so much that in 2009, he arranged for Italian pizza chefs to come to North Korea and teach them how to make it. However, this wasn’t enough for him so he had more representatives fly to Naples and Rome to learn more about the art of pizza-making. - Hawaiian pizza isn’t from Hawaii.
Contrary to popular belief, Hawaiian Pizza isn’t actually made in Hawaii. The pineapple-laden dish was first made in Canada back in 1962.
